Best Times to Plan Your Fall Class Trip to DC
Plan your class trip to DC anywhere from late September through early November. The crowds are significantly smaller, and attractions are widely available. You can even score those hard-to-get museum tickets and take time to enjoy the exhibits!

Walking Town DC
In September, check out the easy walkability of the nation’s capital during a free, week-long public tour program. Guided walking tours are held throughout the District and include famed neighborhoods, historic highlights, themed excursions, and (of course!) some hidden gems.
Halloween Hunt at the O Museum in the Mansion
The O Museum in the Mansion invites you on a Halloween hunt through its historic halls! There are more than 100 themed rooms, 80 secret doors, and covert passages – all leading to Halloween surprises (and prizes!)
Air & Scare at Udvar-Hazy
Experience the spooky side of air and space with the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center‘s annual Air & Scare. Typically the weekend before Halloween, visitors can dress in costume and enjoy creepy crafts, spooky experiments, and other Halloween-themed fun.
Spirited Ghost Tours
Hop on a haunted and historic ghost tour in DC’s oldest neighborhoods, cemeteries, and other spooky spots. There are lots of choices to satisfy even the most terror-loving teens!
Día de los Muertos
On the Día de los Muertos, the Smithsonian American Art Museum hosts free, student-friendly activities like traditional Mexican folk dancing, mariachi performances, and hands-on crafts.
The National Museum of the American Indian also hosts a free, day-long event in observance of the holiday. Student groups can enjoy dance performances, artist and food demos, take part in mask-making, learn about fascinating Mexican traditions, leave photos and mementos to their loved ones and so much more.
The Day of the Dead has never been so much fun!
Spectacular Seasonal Sights
Rock Creek Park
With an entrance right next to the National Zoo, Rock Creek Park is easily accessible to students and a perfect place to experience DC’s magnificent fall foliage. There are miles of hiking trails winding through the park for every ability level.
Some spectacular spots include Boulder Bridge, Miller Cabin and Rapids Bridge.
Memorials and Monuments
Visiting Washington DC’s memorials and monuments is always a memorable experience. But autumn offers an even more beautiful backdrop of color and clarity. It’s also a wonderful time to slow down and enjoy them without a rush of tourists pushing you through.
Washington National Cathedral
Odds are that this one is on your itinerary already – but autumn at the National Cathedral is a completely unique experience. The stunningly vibrant gardens blend brilliantly with the Cathedral’s Gothic Revival architecture.
Veterans Day in DC
Your class trip will be unforgettable when you spend Veterans Day in DC. Observe this day is it was intended – honoring those who have served in the U.S. military.
Experience a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier or at other sites like the Navy Memorial. Listen to the poignant sound of bells and bugles at the World War I Memorial.
Honor the Japanese American and women who served in WWII at their respective memorials and attend commemorations for the brave men and women who served in Korea and Vietnam. Then, spend time at the National Museum of the American Indian for a fresh perspective on the legacy of Native American military members.
And don’t forget to stop at George Washington’s Mount Vernon where Veterans Day events include a floral tribute to the military, a Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution ceremony, and music- and history-focused activities like a Q&A with Mount Vernon’s resident fifer.
Be sure to include time at the National Veterans Day Parade (more info below) or enjoying a concert like the US Navy Band at the MLK Library or US Marine Chamber Orchestra at the National Cathedral.

Marching bands honor our nation’s heroes while proudly displaying their skills in the National Veterans Parade (the next of which will take place November 9, 2025.)
Veterans organizations, floats, specialty vehicles, and the thrilling tattoo of marching bands add to the excitement as you pass through cheering crowds on Constitution Avenue.
Mexican Cultural Institute
Explore a fundamental Mexican tradition as you perform at the Día de los Muertos celebration at the Mexican Cultural Institute. Students will take part in a cultural exchange of music, dance, and heritage during this important festival experience.
